Judge Liles Burke, Northern Alabama U.S. District Court

Judge Liles Burke

Northern Alabama U.S. District Court

Liles Clifton Burke was born in June 1969 in Cullman, Alabama. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law. He entered private practice. Burke attended the JAG School at the University of Virginia and entered the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Alabama National Guard, where he served ten years, attaining the rank of Major.

He was a municipal prosecutor and municipal attorney for the City of Arab, later becoming a municipal judge for that city, a post he held for five years. The governor appointed Burke to be a Marshall County District Judge, and he was later elected to that judgeship without opposition. Four years later, he was appointed to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.

President Donald Trump nominated Burke to be a United States district judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. His nomination was not voted on in a timely way and was returned to the president who renominated him. He was confirmed by the Senate and received his judicial commission in October 2018.

He is married to Natalie Jones, and they have two children.

In the News…

U. S. District Judge Liles C. Burke will allow a challenge to the gender transition ban for children in Alabama to move forward while similar challenges over medical transgender intervention head to the United States Supreme Court.

Judge Burke rejected a request from the Department of Justice to pause the case until cases in other states had been adjudicated.

Under Alabama law, it is a felony for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones to people under the age of 19. At least 22 other states have established bans restricting such transgender medical interventions for children. The medical efficacy of those treatments has become increasingly questionable.
